Water Colors

Graduated Wash

  • Tilt board with paper at an angle.
  • Apply full-strength color horizontally across top of paper.
  • Pick up a little water on brush and dilute each successive stroke.
  • Continue until satisfactory gradation of tone is achieved.

    Salt Effect

  • Paint flat or graded wash over surface of paper.
  • Sprinkle salt crystals on wash and allow to dry.
  • Brush remaining salt crystals from surface to reveal crystaline effect.

    Flat Wash

  • Mix sufficient quantity of paint and fully load brush.
  • Tilt paper on board toward you and paint first stoke across top of paper.
  • Pick up color as it collects at bottom of the stroke and continue with successive strokes allowing slight overlap where they join.
  • Work toward the bottom of the paper.

    Resist and Splatter

  • Apply mask fluid, maxing tape or wax crayon to areas of your paper you want to block from paint.
  • Paint a wash of color over blocked areas and allow to dry.
  • Load paint on toothbrush or hard bristled brush. Drag bristles against blunt edge of knife or wire mesh to create splatter effect.

    Dry Brush

  • Starve brush of water before lifting paint from palatte.
  • Apply paint to surface lightly and with rapid strokes in sweeping action.
  • Vary amounts of water used for additional effects.
  • Experiment with different kinds of brushes.

    Wet-in-Wet

  • Dampen paper first by sponging whole sheet or local areas.
  • Float one or more washes on damp paper.
  • Assist flow of paint by tilting paper at slight angles.
  • Add additional washes before paper dries.
